Working on an European olive specimen

A transformation to begin a new path

This European olive bonsai specimen has been in the In Arte Bonsai garden since 2018. A targeted cultivation program has been carried out to strengthen the tree and create new vegetation.

In the meantime, cleaning and maintenance interventions have been carried out on the already aged and very interesting dry wood. Initially, a water jet gun was used for thorough cleaning. Subsequently, a consolidant liquid and a jin liquid were used to complete these operations.

In December 2019, it was decided to carry out the first styling work, which consisted of two moments:

  1. A crucial selection of branches. The vigorous growth in the two previous seasons had produced many branches that were not aesthetically pleasing and were therefore pruned. Olive trees tolerate this type of pruning very well and easily regenerate new vegetation.
  2. Primary and secondary branches were wired with aluminum wire and so positioned. Some branches also had guy wires to help maintain their position. No apical pruning was performed on the first two tiers on the left: this will allow for faster thickening of the first branch, which is still young and has an inadequate diameter.
